Declan Rice defends Manchester United's Paul Pogba in spat with Liverpool FC great Graeme Souness

West Ham midfielder Declan Rice has leaped to the defence of Paul Pogba amid the ongoing war of words between the Manchester United star and Graeme Souness.

The Liverpool legend turned Sky Sports pundit has been critical of Pogba on a number of occasions, questioning his attitude and work ethic at United.

And Pogba recently hit back in a United podcast, saying that he'd never even heard of Souness, prompting a huge reaction from fans and in the media.

"I heard he was a great player and stuff like that," said Pogba. "I don't know the face but the name [I do]."

That in itself prompted a response on Sky, with Souness telling Pogba: "The oldest saying in football comes to mind, put your medals on the table."

The row shows little sign of ending, with Rice - who himself has been linked with a move from West Ham to United - defending his fellow player.

Souness’ quotes were shared on Instagram by Three Sixty TV and the England international commented.

"Why do people hate on Pogba? Don’t make any sense," he said.

"The guy is ridiculous, one of the best in the world. You think he wants to be injured?

"Some things in football you can’t prevent."

Pogba is set to return from an ankle injury for United when football returns, though that date is not yet known amid the current coronavirus lockdown. The France World Cup winner hasn't featured for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's side since Boxing Day, having had surgery on his ankle.

And although he's been linked with a transfer away from United, with Juventus and Real Madrid linked, he could yet remain at Old Trafford.
