Declan Rice apologises for pro-IRA Instagram comments

Declan Rice has issued an apology for comments made on social back in 2015 which appeared to show support for the IRA.

The West Ham midfielder switched allegiances from the Republic of Ireland to England - the country of his birth - this year, and has been called up to the Three Lions' senior squad for upcoming Euro 2020 qualifiers against Czech Republic and Montenegro.

The comments in question relate to when Rice was a member of the Republic of Ireland's youth side back in 2015.

A comment he made on Instagram saying 'My brudda. UP THE RA. Wait till we draw England', and another post with the hashtag 'UPTHERA', have resurfaced and Rice has quickly apologised for them.

Rice released a statement via a story post on his Instagram account on Thursday which read: "I am aware the a poorly-expressed comment I made when I was a junior player has been circulated on social media.

"I recognise now that my attempt to show support for my team-mates at the time could be negatively interpreted.

"While my naive words were not meant to be a political opinion and do not represent who I am, I sincerely apologise for any offence caused."

The Football Association is aware of the historic posts.

"We are aware of the matter and will be writing to him to remind him of his responsibilities," said an official.
