The England international’s tame spot-kick was saved by Dean Henderson after Scott McKenna’s handball, capping off a hugely frustrating afternoon for David Moyes’ side.
Said Benrahma’s opening goal was controversially ruled out following VAR intervention after Michail Antonio was penalised for a foul in the build-up, before both Pablo Fornals and the Algerian hit the crossbar.
After a frustrating summer window, West Ham have now lost their opening two Premier League games, though perhaps Thursday’s meeting with Viborg in the first-leg of their Europa Conference League playoff will offer some welcome respite.
Rice, who has replaced Mark Noble on penalty duty, has now missed two consecutive Premier League spot-kicks, the last being against West Brom in May 2021.
Taking to Twitter on Sunday, Rice said: “Can only Apologise for the penalty miss, thought we created enough to get something from the game.
“We go again & stay together.”
