Declan Devine slams prospect of eight-team Premier Division

Declan Devine has slammed the prospect of an eight-team Premier Division as “absolute madness”.

Various options for a new look league are being discussed and the FAI insist that no decision has been reached.

An All-Island league remains as one of the options in the mixer, but an eight-team top flight with a late season split between the top and bottom four sides was discussed.

But Derry City boss Devine told ‘Drive 105’: “That would be crazy, absolute madness.

“We’re looking to expand the league and grow it, not cut some really good teams out of the equation.

“It would be madness. Whatever changes have to be made are up to the powers that be, but we’ve a brilliant product here in Ireland.

“We saw that last Saturday with the EA Sports Cup final at the Brandywell and we’ll see it again tonight when the city gets behind the team against Bohemians.”

Devine added: “We have to understand that we’ve a lot of good football clubs in Ireland and a lot of good players and management staff.

“We should be trying to expand it, rather than cutting it.”

Meanwhile, Everton and Celtic have been linked with Derry striker David Parkhouse who is on loan from Sheffield United.
