Declan Bonner says Donegal will approach Mayo showdown as a winner takes all quarter-final

Declan Bonner says Donegal will approach their Castlebar showdown with Mayo as a winner takes all All-Ireland quarter-final.

The Tir Chonaill men's draw with Kerry sets up a titanic MacHale Park showdown and the Donegal boss is optimistic that Neil McGee and Paddy McGrath will return in time, though obviously Eoghan Ban Gallagher will miss out after snapping his ankle in training.

"Listen, we have it all to do now in two weeks," said Bonner. "We haven’t even looked at Mayo, we’ll sit down this evening and start getting ready for that over the next 13 days.

"It's a huge match. It is difficult place to get a result and our preparation for that will start later this evening on our way home and we will get back training during the week.

"It is a winner take all, it is an All-Ireland quarter-final with a semi-final place at stake back here in three weeks time.

"That is the challenge. That is the goal. From our point of view I thought it was a great game of football with Kerry, the lads showed real character. Both teams went at it and it was an epic battle."

Bonner highlighted Michael Murphy and Ryan McHugh for outstanding performances, but it was his makeshift defence that came in for special mention.

"We lost basically our full-back line," he pointed out.  "But the lads who came in done really well, Odhran McFadden-Ferry was really good, Caolan Ward and Stephen McMenamin and we got to grips with David Clifford.

"I thought to a man they really battled, gave it their all and left it all out on the pitch.

"For me, it was about the whole group and they really stuck in there. It may not have happened but for one or two players and the guys coming off the bench again. They all did their job.

"They all really emptied it out there on the pitch and that’s all you can ask. We have to do it all again in two weeks!".
