Decision to veto Bristol Airport expansion set to be ratified by councillors

A decision to reject plans for a major expansion of Bristol Airport is due to be ratified by councillors next week.

North Somerset Council planning and regulatory committee refused the expansion plans when it met last month

Councillors said the environmental and societal impacts outweighed the economic benefits of the expansion, which would see passenger numbers grow to 12 million by 2020.

Because the committee’s decision was against the officers’ recommendation, the council’s procedure for a major application is for it to go back to a future meeting of the committee for the decision to be ratified.

The meeting is at 2.30pm next Wednesday (18 March) at the Town Hall in Weston-super-Mare when councillors will be asked to confirm the decision and the reasons for refusal.

Once the decision is ratified the applicant will have six months to decide whether to lodge an appeal which would be heard at a public inquiry.

Hundreds of people packed into the council chamber last month when the application was discussed.

The meeting was also streamed live on the council’s website to allow people who could not get to Weston to watch it.

The council has again arranged for the airport item to be live streamed on its website at www.n-somerset.gov.uk/airport so people can watch it at home.

The meeting will be in two parts.

The airport will be the first item on the agenda.

After this there will be a short break to allow those attending for the airport item to leave before the committee reconvenes to consider the other items on the agenda.

Council bosses have again taken the step of banning certain items from being brought into the meeting.

These include sharp objects, marker pens, umbrellas and loud hailers and air horns.
