The decision to stage the Munster and Leinster hurling finals on the same day once again has surprised Tipperary boss Liam Sheedy.
With the tightening of the Championship timetable to allow for an August All-Ireland final last year, the two provincial showpieces were held on the same day along with the Joe McDonagh Cup final.
And fixture-makers have stuck with the same schedule this year as two of the bigger games in the hurling calendar take place within a couple of hours of each other on Sunday, though both the Limerick-Tipperary and Wexford-Kilkenny games will be televised live.
Prior to returning as Tipperary manager, Sheedy chaired the Hurling 2020 Committee, sat on the GAA’s high-powered Management Committee and also made the shortlist for the GAA director general’s job, which eventually went to Tom Ryan last year.
He said: “I thought after last year that there might have been a change. There are a lot of hurling folk that would go to both matches so if you had one on the Saturday evening and one on the Sunday, they would get even bigger crowds because there would be a lot of people from Munster that would go to the Leinster final and vice versa.
“But I'm gone out of that admin and fixtures planning and back on the sideline and I let someone else look after that side of the house.”
