Decision set to be made over forgotten Chelsea man ahead of next season

Roma are planning to ask Chelsea if they can re-sign on-loan right-back Davide Zappacosta this summer.

That's according to a report by Italian media outlet Gazzetta Dello Sport.

The Serie A club, who currently lie fifth in Italy's top tier, are keen to sign the defender on loan for another season, as this term has proven to be a nightmare on the injury front for the Italian.

Since signing on loan from the Blues back in August, Zappacosta has been restricted to just 12 minutes of first-team football, which came all the way back in August.

Coronavirus: What events have been cancelled?

He has since been sidelined with a calf muscle injury and a cruciate ligament rupture.

Those injury woes have forced Zappacosta to miss the entire season, meaning the Italian giants have not been handed the opportunity to have a proper look at the qualities he can offer.

The defender, who joined Chelsea back in August 2017, is due back at Stamford Bridge at the end of this season, but it seems unlikely that he will tie in with the plans of head coach Frank Lampard, who is adopting a youthful approach in West London.

As well as that, Chelsea are already well-stocked at right-back with captain Cesar Azpilicueta and highly-rated youngster Reece James battling it out to be Lampard's first-choice right-sided full-back.

With that in mind, it seems unlikely that Zappacostta would feature in Lampard's long-term plans, meaning the club could be open to the possibility of sending him out on loan for a second season in succession, despite the report not saying whether or not Chelsea would sanction another loan deal.

The Italian is under contract at Stamford Bridge until the summer of 2022, meaning that another season-long loan away from the club could be the best thing for all parties, as it would mean the defender could play on a regular basis and, in the interests of Chelsea, raise his value so that the club could look to move him on for a fee in the summer of 2021.
