Decision on whether Neil McEvoy AM can rejoin Plaid Cymru delayed after leaks to media

The committee deciding whether to allow expelled AM Neil McEvoy to rejoin Plaid Cymru is likely to be disbanded following leaks to WalesOnline and BBC Wales.

Earlier this week we reported how the 12-strong committee was split over whether to allow the South Wales Central AM to rejoin the party. He was expelled for 12 months last year after three complaints against him were upheld.

A statement from Plaid Cymru said: “In order to safeguard the integrity of the process and the decision in respect of the case, the chair of the membership, discipline and standards committee [solicitor Fflur Jones] has concluded that section 20 of the party’s constitution should be invoked, giving the national executive committee (NEC) the power to temporarily amend the party’s standing orders.

"We regret two instances of unauthorised disclosure of information that have occurred in respect of Mr Neil McEvoy AM’s application to rejoin the party, which is currently under the committee’s consideration. At the request of [Ms Jones], the NEC is invited to disband the committee and appoint new members to the committee who would be able to deal with the application afresh.”
