Decision made on Jose Mourinho's future as Tottenham trio run the risk of suspension

Here is your Tottenham Hotspur morning digest for Friday, February 26.

Mourinho issues Markandy promise

Spurs' 4-0 win over Wolfsberger in the last-16 of the UEFA Europa League at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Wednesday evening marked a special occasion for youngsters Nile John, Marcel Lavinier and Dane Scarlett after they stepped of the substitutes bench during the second half.

Scarlett claimed an assist for Carlos Vinicius to lash home his second of the night whilst John and Lavinier were awarded their first appearances for the senior side.

All of the attention following the full time whistle centred around Scarlett, his assist and head coach Jose Mourinho's plan for him ahead of next season.

Football Digest: Does Jose Mourinho finally trust Gareth Bale at Tottenham?

But it is not just Scarlett that appears to have a big future ahead of him, as the same can be said, too, for fellow youngster Dilan Markanday, who was also amongst the substitutes on Wednesday night.

Unfortunately, he was not called upon by Mourinho to earn some minutes on pitch, but the Portuguese chief most certainly has not forgotten about him. Markanday posted a picture of himself warming up on his Instagram page, writing the caption: "A great experience. The hard work continues."

That drew a response from Mourinho, who replied: "Your day will arrive."

With that said, it is clear that the former Chelsea and Manchester United chief also has big plans for the youngster.

Trio in danger of suspension

Tottenham trio Matt Doherty, Dele Alli and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg are all just one booking away from a ban in the Europa League.

Doherty picked up a caution during the win over Wolfsberger and joins Hojbjerg and Dele in being on the brink of a suspension. They have all picked up two yellow cards each in the competition so far this season, meaning they run the risk of missing the second-leg of Spurs' last-16 tie, whoever they face.

Fortunately, should Spurs progress to the quarter-finals and the aforementioned trio avoid being booked in the last-16, that immediate threat of a ban would be a distant memory as the card system is reset once the last-eight of the competition gets going.

Thus, should all three players, though unlikely, get booked in the first-leg of Spurs' respective last-16 tie, they would miss the second-leg of that tie, whilst a booking in the second-leg, should Spurs progress, would mean a suspension for the first-leg of the quarter-finals.

Spurs' stance on Mourinho's future

Mourinho's position as head coach at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium is currently under review, according to a report by the Daily Record.

Despite leading Spurs to the last-16 of the Europa League, the former Manchester United boss remains under pressure in north London after a run of five defeats in their last six Premier League matches.

Recently, RB Leipzig boss Julian Nagelsmann has been linked with taking over the role this summer, should Spurs pull the trigger.

However, Spurs appear to be keeping their long-term options open for now, despite Nagelsmann and Leicester City chief Brendan Rodgers being linked with the job in north London.
