Decision made on expansion of Tiki bar on 'niche' Nottingham city centre street

A bar in a 'niche' city centre street will now be able to increase its capacity after plans for an expansion were given the green light. Tropichol Tiki Bar in Hurts Yard, a side street between Upper Parliament Street and Long Row, can now combine with a neighbouring property.

Managers have been successful in their submission of a plan to change the use of the building next door to allow for the expansion. The plan will see 1 and 2 Hurts Yard made into one larger unit by knocking through the walls. According to planning documents, this would see the bar's capacity increase and allow it to cater for 55 customers, up from 30.

A planning document has indicated work will now start on knocking through internal walls on both floors. The two buildings were previously used for different things - with the neighbouring tattoo parlour shut down in July.

The owners will now be able to serve alcohol in both units and retain the ability to serve food. No hot food will be served at the expanded bar though at the moment, in accordance with planning documents.

City council planning officers said there were no concerns raised by Environmental Health officials. Tropichol's spot was previously operated by A Whisky Affair, which specialised in top-quality whiskies and cocktails. The bar opened in October 2019 but closed in March 2020 on Prime Minister Boris Johnson's lockdown orders and never reopened.

Landlords then served a notice of abandonment to the bar for non-payment of rent. The recent planning application was submitted by Mark Allsop of Tropichol.
