Decision made on controversial plan affecting Nottingham Forest, Leeds and West Brom - reports

The Premier League have ditched controversial plans for a 22-team division next season, according to reports.

West Bromwich Albion and Leeds United currently occupy the two automatic promotion spots in the Championship, with Nottingham Forest, Fulham, Brentford and Preston North End in the play-off positions.

However, with the coronavirus suspension now set to last until at least June, there are fears that the season will not be completed.

The EFL and Premier League remain committed to fulfilling fixtures but a precedent of cancelling promotions in a major league has now been set.

Earlier this week, the Dutch Football Association announced that all promotions and relegations would be cancelled in the top two divisions.

There was an expectation that the two sides at the top of the Eerste Divisie would be granted promotion, but that was dismissed in Friday’s statement.

Brighton owner Tony Bloom had proposed that no top-flight teams should be relegated, which in turn, could mean a 22 team Premier League, with West Brom and Leeds awarded promotion.

That would mean no third promotion spot through the play-offs, denying Forest a chance of securing a return to the top flight.

However, according to Football Insider, those plans have now been shelved, with few teams keen to add more matches to next season’s schedule.

It is claimed that the suggestion was discussed, before being dismissed - but there is still believed to be a strong appetite to complete the season naturally.
