Decision due on redevelopment around Alder Hey Children's Hospital

Long awaited plans for development on and around Liverpool’s Alder Hey Children's Hospital site are finally set to go before councillors next week.

Liverpool Council’s planning committee will consider two proposals surrounding the Knotty Ash site. However, the plans are likely to face heavy opposition from local councillors and neighbours, many of whom have already objected to the proposals.

The first part of the development would see an extension of a clinical accommodation block on the hospital site itself and expanded facilities there.

The second would see a new development of land on nearby Springfield Gardens, with a series of office, commercial and residential housing blocks built.

A report to councillors outlining the facilities in the proposed new development on Springfield Gardens said: “The application proposes the a scheme of mixed use residential and commercial elements comprising 4 no. development blocks of between 3 and 5 storeys in height, consisting of commercial and retail premises including food and drink use, gym and crèche, 102 apartments , 66 serviced apartment and to erect a 4 -storey office block , a 5 storey block containing 27 retirement apartments, a 2-storey block containing 13 Autism apartments and 40 dwelling houses. “

Lengthy objections have already been received from four ward councillors for the surrounding areas and a large number of neighbours.

They list a range of reasons for opposing the plans, including fears about overcrowding, a lack of green space and traffic problems.

Despite these objections, planners have recommended the proposals be approved.

The planning committee will consider the proposals on Tuesday.
