Decades-old Bristol business could be demolished to make way for 50 student flats

Fifty student flats could be built on the site of a decades-old business in the heart of Bedminster.

Developers are proposing to create accommodation on the site of Paramount Cars on West Street, a used car dealership which was established in 1976.

Paragon Bristol Developments have acquired the building at 157-165 West Street, as well as the vacant industrial unit at number 155.

It is not currently clear whether Paramount Cars will relocate or whether the business has closed permanently.

But Paragon Developments will seek permission from Bristol City Council to demolish the buildings and create a new student residential development, as well as a replacement industrial unit.

The proposal to build the flats says: "The new sustainable accommodation, of some 50 student beds, would be arranged in nine cluster flats, around two landscaped courtyards.

"In keeping with nearby buildings, the proposed development will be up to three-storeys in height."

There will be no parking on site for the students, and a restriction on bringing a motor vehicle will be written into the student tenancy agreement.

Three parking spaces will be provided for students to be used on days when they are moving in or out, and by maintenance vehicles as well.

The proposal continues: "The site lies outside the existing residents’ parking scheme, but if this area is included in the scheme in the future, the residents of this development would not be permitted to obtain a permit."

The developers have not yet submitted a planning application to the council, and they are consulting residents before they do so in February.

The consultation period runs from Saturday, January 8 until Friday 28. You can leave your thoughts and read more about the proposals by clicking here.
