Debuts, goals, trophies - Leeds United's international break report card

With the international break done and dusted, Leeds United will be hoping that their coterie of stars on duty with their nation can bring back their experience to Elland Road as they look to kick on in the Championship.

It's been a mixed bag across the board however for various Whites stars, with contrasting emotions after big wins and bruising defeats.

The various members of Marcelo Bielsa’s squad will make their way back to Thorp Arch as United prepare for a Yorkshire derby with Barnsley in their first game back.

But just how did Leeds's international contingent get on over the past fortnight?

Liam Cooper - Scotland

The Whites skipper made his long-awaited international debut over three years after his first call-up, featuring for Steve Clarke's side in both of their European Championship qualifiers.

Alas, the centre-back was unable to prevent his side slipping to double defeats in Group I, as they went down to last year's World Cup hosts Russia and the number one side in the world, Belgium.

Cooper's individual performance in the latter drew scorn as well from Football Scotland, who said that he'd "looked like he'd jacked it by the end (sic)."

The losses leave the defender and his country nine points off the top two with four games to go, effectively ending any chance of them reaching Euro 2020 at the first try - though they will have a second shot through the play-off system thanks to their Nations League showing.

Stuart Dallas - Northern Ireland

Having gone four games from four without failure, Michael O'Neill's side saw their first loss of their qualifying campaign against Germany, to see them slip to second in Group C.

Right-back Dallas and his team-mates remain ahead of the much-fancied Netherlands however for the moment, and know that their destiny still sits within their own hands.

Former United shotstopper Bailey Peacock-Farrell had a good night at Windsor Park, and Dallas just missed with an effort in the second half to boot, in the spirited 2-0 defeat.

Speaking after the match, the veteran 28-year-old hailed his side as "outstanding" against the 2014 world champions.

Gjanni Alioski - North Macedonia

The 27-year-old showed his versatile side on show for his nation as they kept their Euro 2020 hopes alive with four points from two games, including a draw with Israel and an away win over Latvia.

Alioski played in attacking midfield in the former on the right flank, before plugging the gap at left-back in the latter.

His country trail Slovenia, who sit second in Group G, by only three points, with the pair set to meet next time out in October.

Mateusz Klich - Poland

Elsewhere in Group G, the 29-year-old continued his career resurgence at international level with appearances in both of their fixtures against Slovenia and Austria.

The former saw him start as they slipped to a shock 2-0 loss, which arguably cost him his place when he dropped to the bench for the latter.

He made a cameo appearance in the final quarter-hour as the two sides played out a draw, to keep his country at the top of the pile with four games to go.

Alfie McCalmont - Northern Ireland/Northern Ireland Under-21s

The central midfielder followed up his senior debut for Leeds with a full cap for his country too, being brought on as a substitute in their 1-0 friendly win over Luxembourg.

However, he dropped back down to the under-21s side for their 2021 European Championship qualifying campaign, starting in their goalless encounter with Malta before picking up a yellow card in a score draw with Finland.

He'll be expected to feature for the youth set-up against Denmark next month, fitness permitting.

Eddie Nketiah - England Under-21s

The Gunners loanee enjoyed an excellent few days with the Three Lions youth team, snatching a double against Turkey last Friday in a thrilling 3-2 encounter.

Though he was unable to add to his tally on Monday, he still played a key part as Aidy Boothroyd's side picked up a 2-0 win over Kosovo to make it two wins from two in the hunt for Euro 2021.

Jamie Shackleton and Jack Clarke - England Under-20s

The two Leeds United academy graduates started alongside one another in the Under-20s fixture away to Switzerland.

Shackleton played just over 75 minutes, while Clarke played the entirety and came up with the goods, scoring an injury-time header to win the game 1-0.

Ryan Edmondson - England Under-19s

The teenage striker spoke of the pride he felt wearing the Three Lions’ number nine shirt after scoring in his England Under-19s debut, a 3-1 win over Greece.

He had to settle for a place off the bench in his second outing though, being substituted on for Liverpool’s Curtis Jones for the final ten minutes. He was unable to turn things around as England lost 1-0 away in Germany.

Nohan Kenneh - England Under-17s

The defender picked up some silverware during the international break after helping the Young Lions do the Syrenka Cup, following a penalty shoot-out win over Poland.

Having come off the bench against Austria in the semi-finals, he started in the final, but missed out on the climactic round of spot-kicks after he was substituted in the 69th minute.
