Debris field found in search for missing Titanic submarine with Glasgow student onboard

The US Coast Guard confirms a "debris field" has been found within the search area for a missing submarine.

The debris was discovered by a remotely-operated vehicle near the wreckage of the Titanic, which is where the submersible is believed to be.

Glasgow student Suleman Dawood is onboard the missing vessel, alongside his dad Shahzada.

This new update comes after the estimated oxygen supplies would have run out. The debris was found on the sea floor near the Titanic, with the findings being 'evaluated' by experts.

A spokesperson for the USCG wrote: "A debris field was discovered within the search area by an ROV near the Titanic. Experts within the unified command are evaluating the information."

A conference will be held at 3pm EST to discuss the findings.

A major search was launched after the submarine, which was to visit the Titanic wreck, failed to check in an hour and 45 minutes into the trip.

The Titan submersible was estimated to have about a four-day supply of oxygen when it launched on Sunday morning in the North Atlantic but experts repeatedly emphasised it was an estimate.

It emerged early this afternoon that onboard was a Glasgow Strathclyde University business student, Suleman Dawood, 19.

Suleman is one of five who are missing, along with his dad Shahzada, 48, British billionaire Hamish Harding, "Titanic's greatest explorer" Paul-Henri Nargeolet and CEO of OceanGate Stockton Rush.

A statement from Professor Sir Jim McDonald, Principal & Vice Chancellor at Strathclyde Uni, read: "I write to you with a heavy heart to share the news that one of our students, Suleman Dawood, is a passenger on board the submersible that is missing in the North Atlantic.

"We are deeply concerned about Suleman, his father and the others involved in this incident. I know you will join me in sending our thoughts and prayers to their families and loved ones.

"Suleman is a Strathclyde Business School student and has just completed his first year with us.

"Our Student Wellbeing team is on hand to offer any appropriate support to the wider Strathclyde community at this distressing time."
