Deborah James cancer research funds hurtle towards £6m mark

Dame Deborah James is getting rapidly close to reaching £6m in her incredible fundraising efforts for Cancer Research. The Bowel Babe's Just Giving page is hurtling towards raising the next huge landmark sum as support continues to flood in for her cause.

The Just Giving page said it is “raising money to fund clinical trials and research into personalised medicine for cancer patients and supporting campaigns to raise awareness of bowel cancer”. The much-loved podcast host has now moved to hospice-at-home care to treat her terminal bowel cancer.

As donations, which have completely surpassed the initial £250,000 target, rapidly climb, Deborah has released touching words about being made a Dame for her “tireless campaigning." Its total has now passed £5.8m.

The BBC presenter said she had a 'charming' meeting with Prince William when he presented her with a Damehood at her parents' home in Surrey. Dame Deborah told The Sun : "The Duke was so charming and put all of us at ease immediately.

"He was incredibly engaging and generous with his time, I could have spoken to him all afternoon. It was an honour to have him round and he’s welcome for tea and champagne any time.

"I got really emotional when I was presented with my honour. It’s a memory that my family and I will treasure forever."

Special dispensation was given by Buckingham Palace, Kensington Palace and Downing Street which allowed Deborah to become a Dame within a day. Speaking more about her conversation with William, Deborah said: "We shared some really interesting ideas of how the BowelBabe Fund could continue to support the great work for Cancer Research UK and the Royal Marsden."

"As President of The Royal Marsden he is clearly passionate about the hospital and he was deeply knowledgeable about how the BowelBabe Fund could have a meaningful impact." To donate to the Bowel Babe fund go here.
