Debit card at 16? Smartphone at 13? Brits give verdicts on when children should get 'adult' items

A survey has produced a timeline for when Brits think children should achieve certain milestones.

In a survey by YouGov, 49 percent of Brits believe a child should own a 'brick phone' by the age of 11 and 46 percent think 13 should be the age when they get a smartphone.

The figures change for parents with 17-year-olds, however, as more of them believe the age should be 12 for children to have a smartphone.

At the higher end of the milestone list, 65 percent of Brits believe children should get to the age of 16 before getting a debit card and controlling their finances.

Again, parents with 17-year-olds agreed that a year younger was appropriate and 15 would be the correct age for them to own a debit card.

While 65 percent of people think children should be 16 for a debit card, 48 percent think 14 is an acceptable age for boys and girls to wear makeup.

The percentage changes with the gender of the person surveyed with 68 percent of men thinking they should wait until they are 16.

YouGov has created a list of the milestones the Brits surveyed believe children should get to:

Own a ‘brick phone’ – 11 years old

Ride public transport alone – 12 years old

Own a smartphone – 13 years old

Wear makeup – 14 years old

Stay out after dark – 15 years old

Have their own debit card – 16 years old
