Debenhams to axe 2500 jobs as the retailer struggles with the impacts of lockdown

Debenhams has announced they will be cutting 2500 jobs across their stores and warehouses due to the financial impact of lockdown and the pandemic.

The high street retailer has stated they are looking to cut costs at an uncertain time for the business as well as many others across the retail sector.

Earlier in April, the chain announced they were heading into administration after a supposed deal with Mike Ashley fell through.

Edinburgh currently has two Debenhams department stores, one on Princes Street and one in the Ocean Terminal shopping centre, however it is yet unclear how the job cuts will affect these sites.

A spokesman for Debenhams said of the planned 2,500 job cuts: “We have successfully reopened 124 stores, post-lockdown, and these are currently trading ahead of management expectations.

“At the same time, the trading environment is clearly a long way from returning to normal and we have to ensure our store costs are aligned with realistic expectations.

“Those colleagues affected by redundancy have been informed and we are very grateful to them for their service and commitment to Debenhams.

“Such difficult decisions are being taken by many retailers right now, and we will continue to take all necessary steps to give Debenhams every chance of a viable future.”
