Debenhams Silverburn staff told their jobs are 'safe' and that store will be reopening after lockdown

Staff working for Debenhams Silverburn have been told that their jobs are safe and that they will remain on furlough until further notice.

Debenhams previously announced that the branch would be closing after the company fell into administration.

The retailer said that despite “best efforts” it had been unable to agree terms with shopping centre owner Hammerson to reopen five branches.

Staff have now reportedly been told that their jobs are safe and that the store will be reopening when lockdown restrictions are lifted.

A worker told Glasgow Live that staff were told on a conference call on Wednesday the store would not be closing and that all staff would remain on furlough until it was safe to return to work.

It's understood that the department store is still trying to reach an agreement with the landlord to save the store and thousands of jobs.

Debenhams declined to comment.

As previously reported, Next has signed a deal to transform the Silverburn store's beauty department into its own new beauty hall concept.

Trading as The Beauty Hall, Next said the new concept will be complimented by its online beauty business and  a “small number” of further sites where up for discussion as it continues to grow its beauty business.

Next said it was looking to hire ”experienced staff with proven premium beauty retail experience”.

Simon Wolfson, Next’s chief executive, said: “This is an exciting opportunity to work with existing and new beauty brand partners to create a new force in beauty retailing – bringing our online business to life through premium store environments in some of the UK’s most important retail locations.”
