A man has fallen to his death in front of horrified shoppers at the flagship Debenhams store in central London.

The man, who has not yet been identified, fell from a third-floor escalator on Wednesday evening. A spokeswoman for the department store said: “Debenhams can confirm that police were called to the Oxford Street Debenhams store at 18.15 last night following a serious incident where a man fell from the third floor. At this stage there are thought to be no suspicious circumstances.

“Police and the London ambulance service attended and the man was pronounced dead at the scene. Debenhams continues to work with the authorities on the matter.”

A spokeswoman for the London ambulance service said five shoppers had been treated for shock. She added: “We were called at 6.15pm to Debenhams on Oxford Street to reports of a man who had fallen from a height. We sent an ambulance, duty officer and motorcycle responder. Sadly a man was dead at the scene. We treated five patients at the scene for shock but they did not need to go to hospital.”
