Debenhams sales assistant suffers racist attack by 'aggressive' woman at Oxford Street branch

The incident happened at the shop's flagship branch in Oxford Street

A woman has been sentenced after Debenhams sales assistant was called a "f****** Muslim" in a racist attack at the Oxford Street branch last year.

Toneeta Beckford made the comment as she told the employee "go back to your own country" while returning a dress to the store on July 7, 2018.

Beckford, from Sandwell, the West Midlands grabbed a hold of the shop worker’s wrist and said: “Go back to your own country, f***ing Muslim”. The victim was wearing a headscarf at the time, the CPS said.

The 33-year-old was on Monday ordered to pay costs of £300, a victim surcharge fee of £50 and given a 12-month community order after she admitted racially aggravated assault at a previous court hearing.

Lorraine Lewis, from the CPS, said: “This was a racial assault on a victim who was simply doing her job.

“Beckford was caught on the shop’s CCTV assaulting the victim and her aggressive demeanour was also witnessed by others in the shop that day.

“Hate crime has a corrosive effect on our society and the CPS will not hesitate to prosecute those who commit these crimes.”

Beckford was also sentenced to a 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement at Westminster Magistrates’ Court.
