Debenhams latest: Edinburgh store closure dates will depend on stock clearance

No date has been given for when Edinburgh's Debenhams stores will close for good, although decisions on timescales will be based on stock levels.

Prior to level four lockdown measures being introduced on Boxing Day there were 'everything must go' clearance sales taking place at stores.

The chain has shops on Princes Street and at the Ocean Terminal in Leith. Both are currently shut due to lockdown restrictions and it is unknown exactly when they will reopen, with Covid-19 cases rising across Scotland and all non-essential retail off-limits.

It was announced at the start of December that all Debenhams stores were to close for good after last-ditch attempts to save the retailer failed. The chain had been in administration since April but any hopes of a rescue were dashed when JD Sports withdrew from the bidding. 12,000 jobs were put at risk as a result.

When Edinburgh Live asked if there was a date for the closure of the Edinburgh stores, and whether they would reopen at all after the current lockdown, we were told by a spokesperson that no decisions on closure dates had been made just yet, and these would depend on stock levels.

Edinburgh, and the vast majority of Scotland, will remain in level four lockdown until at least the middle of the month, with First Minister Nicola Sturgeon warning this week tighter measures may even be required in order to halt the spread of the new coronavirus variant.
