Debenhams in Ayr to stay open as department store announces list of 22 stores to close

Scores of jobs have been spared after Debenhams confirmed their outlet in Ayr Central shopping mall is to survive an initial axe.

The department store chain is planning to close a total of 50 of its worst-performing stores.

The firm has named its first 22 stores to close early next year, putting 1,200 jobs at risk.

And the positive news for Ayr is that its giant store is not among them.

It has yet to be confirmed what locations will complete the list.

Debenhams, which employs 25,000 people, was taken over by its lenders a fortnight ago in a pre-pack administration that wiped out shareholders.

Its new owners, who are a consortium of banks and hedge funds, are launching the major store-closure programme via an insolvency process known as a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) before the end of this week.

It is expected that the first group of stores will close after trading through the Christmas period.
