Debenhams closing down sale attracts huge queues of eager shoppers

Iconic department store Debenhams is about to close down forever, but a flash sale to get rid of its stock is attracting hundreds of people today in Bristol city centre.

The store has been a huge part of shopping in the city centre for almost 50 years, but that will come to an end within weeks.

After being shut since the start of lockdown in early January, the store has reopened today (April 12) - but only temporarily, until all their stock has gone.

Debenhams fell into administration late last year, and a deal which would have seen JD Sports take it on collapsed in early December.

Late last month, the liquidators of the Debenhams empire announced stores would reopen on April 12, along with other non-essential shops in Bristol, but it would only be a temporary reprieve to sell everything they have left.

We are bringing you updates on shops, pubs, hairdressers and more reopening in Bristol today here.

So the store announced there were bargains to be had, and judging by the length of the queue stretching all the way from the store's entrance, north up Haymarket almost to the start of Cabot Circus, there were plenty of Bristolians eager to check out the discounted stock.

Primark, IKEA and more have also had huge queues of shoppers waiting to get in store today.

Debenhams moved into the huge post-war store on the Horsefair, facing into Broadmead back in 1972 - the building itself had been occupied by Jones department store since it was built in 1957.

What happens to the Debenhams building next remains to be seen, but the store's name - and little else - has been bought by fashion retailer Boohoo, which plans to turn it into an online-only store.
