Debbie is this weeks Wishaw Press Say It With Flowers winner

“She has kept the full family together”.

These are the words of one Wishaw man who has thanked his sister who stepped up in the face of a family tragedy.

Jerry Barr’s world was turned upside down when he was only six when his mum Elizabeth died of a heart attack. Jerry also lost his dad in 2015 but a constant in his life remains his big sister Debbie.

Debbie, now 34, was named Jerry’s guardian and the pair have remained incredibly close.

Jerry, 21, said: “Debbie was 28 at the time but said she would love for me to go and live with her full-time.

“After many children’s hearing and panels, Debbie was granted full guardianship.

“She’s also looked after my sister Estelle who hasn’t been keeping well.

“She has always stood strong in regards to keeping me and my sister afloat never considering herself and always putting others first.

“I was living with her even before my dad died.

“He and Debbie had an amazing bond and he completely understood why I wanted to live there.

“I continued to live with Debbie until last year when I decided to get my own place, and Debbie went the extra mile and more with my furniture and decorations.”

To thank Debbie for everything she has done for him, Jerry nominated her for our weekly Say it with Flowers competition.

And we surprised Debbie at her home in Coltness with a beautiful bouquet thanks to our friends at Pixie’s Petals in Newmains.

Jerry added: “Debbie’s recently had a career change and began working as a carer at Morningside Care Home where she is exceeding expectations always putting a smile on the face of everyone in her care and also the relatives and staff.

“I would just love for this beautiful human being to be acknowledged for everything she has done for myself, the family and also the people she cares for.

“She has such a drive to give and never expects anything in return.

“That’s why I wanted to nominate her for these flowers. She is such a special lady and means the world to me.”
