An additional 20 people were found to have died after receiving COVID-19 vaccinations by May 7, bringing the total of such deaths to 39, the health ministry said Thursday.
The 20 people ranged in age from their 20s to their 90s. In nine of the cases, it is "impossible to assess" whether there was a causal relationship between the person's vaccination and their death, while the other 11 cases are "in an assessment process," according to an expert panel of the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry, which compiled information on the deaths reported by May 7.
The panel concluded there is no grave concern about the vaccine at this point.
About 4.38 million doses of the vaccine had been administered in Japan by May 7.
Japan had seen 107 cases of what is judged to be anaphylaxis by international standards by May 2. About 3.82 million doses of vaccinations had been administered by then, making the frequency of anaphylaxis 2.8 cases per 100,000 doses.
