Death toll from typhoon in central Philippines nears 100

The death toll from a typhoon which hit the central Philippines has risen to 98, authorities said.

Bohol governor Arthur Yap said at least 49 people died in the devastation wrought by Typhoon Rai, while another 39 deaths were reported by the disaster-response agency and the national police.

Officials on Dinagat Islands, one of the south-eastern provinces first pounded by the typhoon, separately reported 10 deaths from just a few towns, with more expected.

The government said Rai had affected about 780,000 people, including more than 300,000 residents who had to evacuate their homes.

President Rodrigo Duterte flew to the region yesterday (Saturday) and promised two billion Philippine pesos (£3 million) in new aid.

At its strongest, the typhoon packed sustained winds of 121 mph and gusts of up to 168 mph, one of the most powerful in recent years to hit the disaster-prone archipelago, which lies between the Pacific Ocean and the South China Sea.
