Death toll from Surfside building collapse climbs to 46

Rescue workers pulled 10 more bodies from the rubble of the Surfside condominium collapse on Wednesday, bringing the total death toll to 46, Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava said at a press briefing Wednesday.

The latest: 32 victims have been identified and next of kin have been notified, Levine Cava said.

  • "Our first responders have truly searched that pile every day since the collapse as if they’re searching for their own families," Levine Cava said, who spoke through tears as she communicated the death toll in Spanish.
  • Levine Cava said Wednesday that family members of victims in the collapse want to visit the site to be close to their relatives. "[We're] working very hard to make that happen," she said.

State of play: Authorities sounding increasingly grim on day 14 of rescue efforts, as 94 people remain missing.

  • "Right now, we’re in search and rescue mode," the county’s police director, Freddy Ramirez, said at a news conference Tuesday evening, AP reports.
  • "Our primary goal right now is to bring closure to the families," Ramirez added.

The outer bands of Tropical Storm Elsa has hindered search efforts, as heavy rain and wind have moved through the region.

  • The first funeral was held for victims of the June 24 tragedy on Tuesday. Lucia Guara, 10, and her 4-year-old sister, Emma, were buried in the same white coffin in a grave alongside their parents, Marcus and Ana Guara, WPLG reports.
