The team behind Love Island USA is mourning the sudden death of executive producer James Barker, who died at age 40 after suffering what ITV America and Peacock described as an "unexpected medical emergency" while Season 8 was filming in Fiji.
The shocking loss occurred in the middle of production on the hit Peacock reality series, which is currently airing its eighth season and has become one of the platform's biggest streaming successes.
"ITV America and Peacock will honor in Tuesday's episode of the 'Love Island USA' series executive producer James Barker, who passed away last week in Fiji after suffering an unexpected medical emergency," the companies said in a joint statement. The networks also paid tribute to Barker's impact on the franchise.
"James' unimaginable loss has been deeply felt across not just the entire Love Island USA production, but throughout all of ITV and Peacock," the statement said. "He was a beloved and greatly valued member of our collective family whose kindness, talent and dedication left an indelible mark on all of us and everyone who had the privilege of knowing and working with him."
No cause of death has been disclosed beyond the description of an unexpected medical emergency, and neither Peacock nor ITV America has released additional details.
Barker had been a key figure in the Love Island USA universe for years. He joined the show in 2020 as a story producer before rising through the ranks to become executive producer for the past three seasons. He also worked on the spinoff series Love Island Games and played a major role in both production and post-production, including helping oversee the show's soundtrack.
Outside the villa, Barker built an impressive résumé across reality television, with credits including Queer Eye, Claim to Fame, Pawn Stars, Cosmic Love and Hulu's dating series Are You My First?
His death comes as Love Island USA Season 8 is enjoying record-breaking momentum. According to NBCUniversal, the season premiere became Peacock's most-streamed original season debut, generating hundreds of millions of viewing minutes during its opening days. Source:
In what has become a heartbreaking final message, Barker celebrated the new season on Instagram shortly after the premiere.
"We come to Fiji for magic. We come to Love Island USA to laugh, to cry, to care," he wrote. "Hope you're all enjoying the new season brought to you by a huge squad of brilliant people."
The series, hosted by Ariana Madix, is expected to continue production, while Tuesday night's episode will include a tribute honoring Barker's life and contributions to the franchise.
For a show built around finding love under the Fiji sun, the sudden death of one of its most important behind-the-scenes architects has cast a shadow over what had been a celebratory and record-setting season.
