Death shock for Mary on Coronation Street

The path to romance rarely runs smooth but poor Mary Taylor was in for a nasty shock just as she thought she was being reunited with her true love on Corrie .

The florist discovered that her old flame Brendan Finch was still in love with her and had been planning to pop the question during Friday night's double bill.

Her sneaky husband Norris Cole hid letters from Brendan to 'protect' Mary and the last letter contained an engagement ring.

She arranged to see her true love in the Rovers Return, but was baffled when his brother turned up instead - and then came the devastating news that Brendan had died.

"There's no easy way of saying this. Brendan's dead," said his brother, who explained that he intercepted the messages so that he could tell Mary in person.

Brendan, the editor of the supernatural magazine The Inexplicable, was played by Ted Robbins.

He arrived on the soap in 2015 and he and Mary hit it off straight away because smitten Mary was a fan of his work.

However, it turned out he was married and his wife stormed into the The Rovers to give Mary a slap.

Mary, played by Patti Clare, married former Kabin boss Norris, played by Malcolm Hebden, in the hope of winning a honeymoon to give her the chance to visit her son Jude in South Africa.

On the day of their wedding Jude surprised the pair by flying over to watch the ceremony with his wife Angie and their son George and Norris and Mary went through with the wedding and decided to remain married.

Norris recently returned to the street and revealed that he wants to marry Freda  Burgess, and Mary was adamant she wasn't going to give him a divorce until she found Brendan's etters.

Mary learned her soul mate died on a UFO hunt on the mountain Helvellyn in the Lake District. Presumably he tripped but it isn't certain.
