A death row murderer who killed an elderly couple while spying on his ex-girlfriend said he was "at peace" moments before he was executed.
Scott Eizember, 62, was administered a lethal injection at Oklahoma State Penitentiary in McAlester, Oklahoma yesterday morning.
He had spent almost two decades behind bars after being convicted of the murders of A.J. Cantrell, 76, and Patsy Cantrell, 70.
Speaking in the execution room while strapped to a stretcher with an intravenous line inserted into his arm, he gave his reported last words by saying: "I’m at peace.
“My conscience is clear, completely. I love my children.”
Rev. Jeffrey Hood, an anti-death penalty minister with a history of protest-related arrests, watched inside the chamber as he was executed.
Department of Corrections Director Steven Harper reversed his earlier decision not to allow Mr Hood into the chamber after consulting with the family members of Eizember's victims.
They had previously decided against allowing Rev. Jeffrey Hood into the chamber due to a lawsuit he had filed in relation to the case, according to Department of Corrections Director Steven Harper.
Eizember was convicted of first and second-degree murder for killing Mr Cantrell and Mrs Cantrell while stalking his ex-girlfriend Kathryn Smith.
He broke into the elderly couple's home in 2003 to wait for her to return to her mum's house across the street.
But he ended up taking the Cantrell pair hostage when they returned home unexpectedly, eventually killing them both.
Prosecutors say Eizember shot and killed Patsy Cantrell with a shotgun found inside the home before bludgeoned A.J. Cantrell to death with the weapon.
Eizember told a parole board last month that he made "no excuses" for his crimes.
He said: "I make no excuses. I belong in prison. I've said that right from the start, and I apologise profusely to all the victims and when I say all, I mean the entire Creek County community."
A factsheet released by Oklahoma Department of Corrections released on the day of execution showed he had for a last meal of medium rare ribeye steak and two sides of fries.
