Death 'only matter of time' say readers who call for e-scooters to be banned

Readers have called e-scooters 'dangerous' following a new rule change.

Voi, which operates the e-scooter system under an agreement with Liverpool Council, said as of yesterday riders would only be able to park the vehicles in specifically marked zones.

The rule change comes as concerns were raised about the safety of the e-scooters in the city.

In a message to customers, Voi said: "At Voi, safety is our number one priority. It’s our mission to make the streets safe for everybody.

"From today, (August 2nd), you’ll only be able to park our e-scooters in a Mandatory Parking Zone (MPZ).

"Right now, you’ve got over 800 Mandatory Parking Zones to choose from, across the city! And many more are going up every week."

However some locals have said the new rule isn't enough and the scooters should be 'completely removed.'

Commenting on the ECHO's Facebook page, Tracy Clark said: "Ban them. They are a danger, some people don't even care where they dump them.

"I watch a young lad put his back in town by Williamson Square other day knock four others over in the process just left them laying on floor for someone to fall over."

Jo Bagot added: "Need removing completely says they can try and eradicate traffic only thing they will eradicate is poor pedestrians trying to jump out the way to avoid them.

"Definitely people using these not old enough too. Dangerous to say the least."

While Philip Francis D'Ambrogio said: "I've lost track of the number of these I've near run over going to and from work.

"They bounce about the place with no regard for anyone around them and no helmets. A death on the road is only a matter of time."

A fourth person, Joanne Hamilton commented: "Totally defeats the object of travelling around the city freely and the astronomical fine if not parked right have made the scooters less appealing... or maybe that is the point.

"Blame people for not parking them properly and fining them in excess of £30 other than admit they weren't the most viable idea."

However not everyone thinks the e-scooters should be banned and find them useful.

Steph Hughan said: "I've really enjoyed using these scooters, they've given me my mobility back.

"All the pedestrian areas are no riding zones, they switch off if you try to ride them. Some areas are Slow Zones, where you go so slow, joggers go speeding past you."

Mike Feeney commented: "Gets from a to b, saves getting a bus and some people hate getting the bus so I say keep them. They been useful."

John Parsons pointed out the scooters are no more dangerous than cyclists, he said: "People saying that they are dangerous and should be banned need to fact check the amount of accidents caused by cyclists against those caused by e-scooters."

While Zula Victoria Boardman added: "They are handy I use them. But when people don't even realise they are indicating or how to use the indicator and just go through red lights they need to be monitored more than parking fines."
