Death of young father after heroin overdose was 'no cry for help' says coroner

The death of a young father after a heroin overdose was "no cry for help" an inquest has heard.

Sam Barton, described as "intelligent, funny and kind" by his mother , was 31 when he was found dead in the bathroom of his partner's home in Swansea on August 29, 2018.

A post-mortem examination and toxicology report presented to a previous inquest hearing at Swansea Civic Centre on February 27 concluded there were significantly high levels of alcohol, cocaine, and opiates, most likely from heroin, in Mr Barton’s system.

The cause of death was given as “multiple drugs toxicity”.

Assistant coroner, Aled Gruffydd, concluded his findings at the inquest held on Wednesday, March 27.

He received a report from Mr Barton's employer, travel company TUI, which he considered did not change the circumstances of Mr Barton's death.

The previous inquest had heard that Mr Barton, a father to a five-year-old boy, had a history of drugs use.

"Mr Barton died of the unintended consequences of his actions and I record a drug-related death," said Mr Gruffydd.

"This was no cry for help, as there was no evidence to back that up," he added.

Speaking in February, Mr Barton's mother, Janet Barton said: "We are at a loss to understand why, in the days before his death, he used drugs. We thought we had won that battle and even the war.”

Mr Gruffydd said Mr Barton had taken more drugs than he was able to toletate. He offered his condolences to the family of Mr Barton, who he said had been described "as a very much loved father, son and brother".
