Death of Ukrainian teenager found unconscious on UK beach is 'not suspicious', say police

The death of a teenage girl found unconscious on a beach in the UK is "not suspicious," police said today.

Albina Yevko, 14, was discovered unconscious on a beach in Dawlish, Devon after being reported missing on March 4.

The youngster had been settling into her new life and attending the local secondary school after fleeing her war-torn home in May last year following the Russian invasion.

Police investigating the death have trawled CCTV, reviewed Albina's phone and have now concluded there was no third party involvement in her death.

Albina's family had told of their devastation of the death earlier this week, Cornwall Live reports.

And speaking yesterday, Detective Inspector Becky Davies said: “Following police enquiries undertaken throughout the Dawlish area, including CCTV trawls, review of Albina’s phone and a forensic post mortem; investigative officers can confirm that there was no third party involvement and that the death of Albina Yevko is not suspicious.

“Our investigation shows that Albina had settled very well in the UK since moving from Ukraine and enjoyed living by the sea and being part of a new family. She had made good friends, both Ukranian and English in the UK, enjoyed school and was very much welcomed by the local community.

“We have informed Albina’s next of kin of our findings and we ask that their privacy is respected at such a difficult time. The police’s role is to continue gathering information surrounding this matter and to submit a file to the coroner who will hold an inquest into this death in due course.

"We would like to thank everyone who has helped us with our investigation into this matter. Our thoughts are with all who knew Albina at this tragic time."

But Devon and Cornwall Constabulary continue to investigate the death. Anyone with any information and has yet to have spoken to officers is asked to contact 101@dc.police.uk quoting case reference 50230052081.

Speaking on Tuesday, Mum Inna Yevko said: "Myself and my family are devastated to have lost our beautiful Albina. Nothing can ever replace her in our hearts."

One close family friend, who also lived in Dawlish, also paid tribute to the teenager.

They said: "I want to honour the memory of my friend's daughter from Ukraine. She was not only young, but also very bright, smart, interesting, she loved to draw.

"She was a good person. I can't believe this could happen to her. We are all a society and we know about stereotypes. That this person is more likely to get into such a story. This is the law of regularity. But what happened to Albina is complete nonsense.

"Albina always discussed with her mother what she would do and where she would go. Thanks to all the services of England for responding so quickly to the search request.

"It is unfortunate that medicine did not have time to help. Please help us find out what happened so that we can warn everyone that there were no such mistakes, not only among Ukrainian children, but also among English children.

"I have known this family since May last year. We met here. They were lucky to live with their family host. They liked England. Inna is a specialist in the IT industry. She had a job.

"Albina rejoiced at the new school. Maybe I found new friends. We met for lunch together. We celebrated the new year together. I found good people in them. I have only good memories of our time together."
