A 17-year-old boy who was found dead in an apartment in East Ukrainian Village during a SWAT standoff was fatally stabbed, according to autopsy results released Friday.
Raheem Hemphill died of multiple sharp force injuries and his death was ruled a homicide, the Cook County medical examiner’s office said. He was initially identified as being 16.
The standoff began about 8:50 p.m. Wednesday, when officers were called to a report of a person stabbed at an apartment in the 1700 block of West Augusta, Chicago police said.
When officers arrived, they spoke to occupants of the apartment who said the teen had taken pills, police said. While police searched for him, the occupants said there had been an argument.
Police initially reported that officers were called to a domestic disturbance at the apartment after a teen smashed a window while arguing with his mother.
A SWAT team was called, and when they made their way inside the apartment the teen was found unresponsive in a room and pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
No other injuries were reported.
Detectives were questioning a person of interest.
