Death of Scot in back of police van two weeks after axe attack to be probed by sheriff

The death of a man in the back of a police van is to be probed by a sheriff.

Stuart Clunie, 34, was found unresponsive by officers after they arrived at a police station in Edinburgh .

Staff at the city's St Leonard's station tried to give him first aid but he was declared dead shortly after by paramedics.

He had been arrested over a domestic incident at his flat but passed away during the journey.

Mr Clunie had been attacked with a sword and an axe in an attack two weeks earlier.

His family insisted he should have been taken to hospital rather than a police station as the facial wounds he suffered in the axe attack were infected.

A fatal accident inquiry is to be held at Edinburgh Sheriff Court where the full circumstances surrounding his death in June 2018 will be investigated.

The inquiry is mandatory because he was in legal custody when he died.

A preliminary hearing will be held next month with the full inquiry expected to get underway later.

A post mortem on Mr Clunie was inconclusive.
