Death of man found near the Portway 'not suspicious'

The sudden death of a man near the Portway in Bristol is being treated as non-suspicious, police have said.

There was a heavy police presence on the Portway in Bristol yesterday (April 28) after a body was found.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing around five police cars and ambulances at the scene, near the tunnel close to Bridge Valley Road, at around 12pm.

A spokesperson for Avon and Somerset Constabulary has now confirmed the death is being treated as non-suspicious.

“The matter has been referred to the coroner as a non-suspicious sudden death," he said.

Public urged to be vigilant after four motorcycles stolen from North Somerset village

"We will continue to make enquiries on behalf of the coroner."

The force previously described the death as unexplained, saying: “We were called at just before midday after a member of the public found the body of a man on land off the Portway.

“The man’s death is being treated as unexplained and we are making efforts to identify him and locate his next of kin.”
