Death of 'generous' pair inspires Bristol curry house's free food giveaway

An Indian restaurant in Bristol will deliver free food to vulnerable families throughout April, inspired by the death of two "generous" friends.

Coronation Curry House founder Nilesh Bhosale wants to commemorate the lives of Sue Didcott and Nick Robins, who passed away in January and February respectively, with his act of kindness.

Sue was the landlady of neighbouring pub The Avon Packet, while Nick was a loyal customer of the popular Bedminster restaurant.

In memory of the much-missed pair, Nilesh will give away a complimentary meal to a family in south Bristol on each Thursday of April.

"We were incredibly saddened by the loss of our close friends Sue and Nick," said Nilesh. "Sue was our next door neighbour at the Avon Packet and always looked out for us.

"When we opened in 2012 she helped us establish ourselves, whether it was helping us with council issues or backing us up when we had rude customers.

"She was like our godmother in many ways and the area isn't the same without her.

"Nick came to eat here twice a week and was an incredibly generous man. On one of his visits a fellow customer didn't have enough money to cover their bill so Nick paid for them.

"He loved his cricket and he even came to watch games at our house with us on several occasions. He was more than a customer, he was family."

People can call Nilesh to nominate a family they think deserve or need free food for any reason, and Nilesh will aim to provide them with a free meal.

Nilesh said people have been getting in touch with him offering to cover the cost of families' meals to enable him to provide free food for more people.

"Some people have been nominating families they know who would really benefit from a free meal and others have been in touch offering to pay for more meals," added Nilesh.

"There are so many lovely people out there willing to help which is incredible. It really sums up the community spirit of the area.

"Both Sue and Nick were always willing to help others in need, so it's lovely to be able to do something like this in their memory. Lives so beautifully lived deserve to be beautifully remembered."
