Death of Bedminster 104-year-old sparks safeguarding concerns

Safeguarding concerns have been raised over the death of a 104-year-old woman.

Retired brewery worker Gladys Allen, of Bedminster, died on March 25, after being admitted to hospital with a fever and infected pressure sores.

An inquest into her death was opened on April 3 at Avon Coroner’s Court.

The coroner’s officer said: “After being admitted to hospital her condition deteriorated and she died.

“The hospital raised some safeguarding concerns. The son of the deceased has also raised concerns over pressure sores.”

The officer added that Ms Allen had been living with family but he believes the concerns relate to care provided by district nurses.

Avon and Somerset Constabulary is not investigating the death, the officer said.

He has requested a report from Ms Allen’s GP.

Assistant coroner, Dr Peter Harrowing, adjourned the inquest to June 18.
