Death of Barlinnie prisoner two days after arrival to be examined at inquiry

The death of a Barlinnie prisoner is to be investigated later this year at an inquiry.

According to Glasgow Live, Stephen Masson passed away just two days after he was remanded to the jail, with his cause of death yet to be confirmed by officials.

A Fatal Accident Inquiry (FAI) will be conducted at Glasgow Sheriff Court to examine the circumstances surrounding the 47-year-old's death, after he was locked up to await trial on December 4, 2018.

HMP Barlinnie is Scotland's largest prison, housing roughly 1,600 criminals.

A preliminary hearing is set to be held at 9am on Thursday November 4.

FAIs are mandatory under Scottish law when a prisoner dies in custody.

Yesterday Glasgow Live reported a similar hearing will be held next week into the death of East Kilbride house breaker Steven Gunn at HMP Addiewell.

The 41-year-old was in jail after breaking into a house in the the town in the early hours of August 5, 2018. He died a year into a three year sentence.

His hearing is scheduled to take place at Livingston Sheriff Court on Wednesday October 13 at 10am.
