Death of Ayrshire man, 23, treated as murder as police confirm victim's identity

The death of a man in Ayrshire at the weekend is now being treated as murder, police have confirmed this evening.

Cops also said that the 23-year-old killed on Sunday in Dalry can now be identified as Sean McKay from the town.

Detectives investigating say the young man was slain in St Margaret's Avenue just after 9pm "for no reason".

Following a post mortem, officers are now treating Sean's death as murder.

His relatives are aware and a report will be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal.

Detective Inspector Stephen McCulloch is now urgently searching for witnesses that have yet to come forward.

DI McCulloch added: "Our priority is to find the person responsible for this crime as soon as possible and we need the help of the community to do so.

"So far the support and response from locals has been helpful to our investigation, however, we still need people to come forward with any information they may have as it could prove crucial to the inquiry.

"Please contact officers via 101 quoting reference number 3404 of Sunday, October 10, 2021 or call Crimestoppers in confidence on 0800 555 111."

Cops maintain that a stabbing 24 hours earlier near to the scene of Sean's murder is not directly linked.

DI McCulloch added: "With regard to this incident and the serious assault on Peden Avenue, Dalry on Saturday night, as a result of extensive and ongoing enquiries in the local area, we are following positive lines of enquiry in relation to each incident.

"We can confirm that whilst the incidents are not directly linked, we are continuing investigations to establish the full circumstances."
