Death of a Salesman at Young Vic: First look at Wendell Pierce and Sharon D Clarke in rehearsals

A star cast is getting ready to bring Arthur Miller’s Death of a Salesman to the Young Vic next month.

The Standard can reveal an exclusive first look at pictures of Wendell Pierce, Sharon D Clarke and Arinzé Kene in rehearsals for the play, which opens on May 9.

Marianne Elliott and Miranda Cromwell are co-directing the production, having achieved award-winning success working together on Company and Angels in America.

Wendell Pierce, best known for his roles in The Wire and Suits, makes his UK theatre debut as Willy Loman. Having wowed audiences with her Olivier Award-winning performance in Caroline, or Change, Sharon D Clarke plays his wife Linda Loman. Kene, whose solo play Misty garnered acclaim in the West End last year, plays their elder son Biff, with Martins Imhangbe as his brother Happy.

The full cast also includes, Ian Bonar, Trevor Cooper, Joseph Mydell, Nenda Neurer, Jennifer Saayeng, Matthew Seadon-Young, Maggie Service and Femi Temowo, with design by Anna Fleischle, lighting by Aideen Malone, sound by Carolyn Downing and music by Temowo.

Past and present intertwine in Death of a Salesman, which follows ageing salesman Willy Loman and his family, as they all attempt to navigate his crippling fears, declining mental health and each of their illusions about their lives.

Considered to be one of the greatest plays of the 20th century, Death of a Salesman opened on Broadway in 1949 and won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama as well as a Tony Award for best play.

Death of a Salesman runs at the Young Vic from May 9-June 29, youngvic.org
