Death of 15-year-old boy in Brainerd ruled a homicide

Police are conducting a homicide investigation after a 15-year-old boy was shot and killed Thursday evening in Brainerd on the South Side.

Marvell Cunningham was shot in the head inside a home around 7 p.m. in the 9300 block of South Wallace Street, according to Chicago police and the Cook County medical examiner’s office.

Paramedics took him to Comer Children’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His death was ruled a homicide by the medical examiner’s office.

Police released no other details and reported no arrests.

Hours later, a 16-year-old girl was shot and killed in East Garfield Park on the West Side.

Six other people were wounded in citywide violence Thursday.
