A 31-year-old Indigenous man has died in custody in Darwin.
The man, who was being held on remand at the adult correctional centre, was found dead in his cell shortly before 6.30 this morning.
The corrections department said officers attempted resuscitation but were not successful.
Guardian Australia understands it is believed the man took his own life.
The corrections department could not confirm the nature of his death, but said police were investigating and would prepare a report for the coroner.
Counselling would be provided for the man’s family, as well as other inmates and corrections staff, the department spokesman said.
All Northern Territory deaths in custody are subject to mandatory coronial investigation.
