Ariel Dorfman’s play Death and the Maiden, written in the wake of the Pinochet regime in Chile, won the Olivier Award for Best New Play in 1992. Sydney Theatre Company presented the Australian premier and national tour that year. Now, Argentina-born Melbourne-based director Leticia Cáceres brings her take to the stage.
The psychological thriller is set in an unnamed country in South America where a military regime has fallen. The new democracy looks hopeful, but victims of the old regime can’t shake their memories. Paulina (Susie Porter) was once blindfolded, abducted and held political prisoner. Through that time, she never saw her captor, but only heard his menacing voice in her ear. Years later, her husband Gerardo (Steve Mouzakis) invites a stranger (Eugene Gilfedder) into their isolated beach house and Paulina hears that voice again.
