THE HEARTLAND
Despite a lack of success for the Knights, the red and blue army turns out in droves and has some of the NRL's best attendances. No doubt, the Hunter fans could fill the stadium twice over for an Origin clash - but even at 50 per cent capacity, they'll produce a memorable atmosphere. Rugby league means so much to the people of the region.
THE HISTORY
Andrew Johns, Danny Buderus, Matt Gidley, Paul Harragon, Ben Kennedy, Kurt Gidley ... the list goes on. Newcastle and the Hunter has provided some of the greatest names in Origin history and some of the greatest names in league history. Daniel Saifiti is showing he's on track to join these illustrious names.
THE FANS
Let's face it - following rugby league hasn't been the easiest gig in Newcastle over the past 10 years. There hasn't been much to celebrate. But still they turn out in force. What better thanks than giving them a chance to see what could be one of the greatest NSW teams of all time strut their stuff and lift the shield.
THE PLAYERS
The finale has to be played in NSW. Imagine if they play it in Melbourne. The theatre-goers will be in the car park by the time the shield is presented. After two games in Queensland, the Blues deserve to celebrate with true blue fans in NSW rugby league heartland.
THE VENUE
McDonald Jones Stadium is a world-class venue. It has hosted the Kangaroos, the Socceroos, the Matildas, the Wallabies and the All Blacks and of course, the Knights and the Jets. It's time for another great team to grace the hallowed turf - this year's Blues ... oh and, the Maroons too.
THE CHANT
The iconic NEW-CA-STLE chant could easily be swapped for NEW SOUTH WALES.
THE CITY
Newcastle has proven itself capable of hosting big events - the Asian Cup, the Supercars, the A-League grand final, the World Surfing League, big-time boxing ... the city belongs on the big stage.
THE BOOST
Queensland didn't pay $8 million to take the first match to Townsville out of fandom alone. The match has the potential to offer a windfall for the region and provide some more prime time exposure for the city. In these tough times, it will give the region's businesses a much-needed economic boost.
