NEW YORK — Jordan Fisher is headed back to the Great White Way.
The actor and singer, who was playing the title role in “Dear Evan Hansen” on Broadway when the COVID-19 shutdown hit in March 2020, will return to the role when the musical reopens at the Music Box Theatre Dec. 11.
Producer Stacey Mindich announced Monday that casting for the show’s three productions — Broadway, London and the North American tour — will pick up where the shows left off before the pandemic.
“Now more than ever, there is a relevancy to the themes of our beautiful musical,” she said in a statement. “It’s a deeply joyous moment to plan for our companies to reunite very soon, as they prepare to greet audiences again with our messages of connection and hope and to give them the chance to hear our score live at The Music Box Theatre, on National Tour and at London’s Noel Coward Theatre.”
Fisher, a “Hamilton” alum, previously portrayed Mark Cohen in Fox’s “Rent: Live” and has other credits including the “Teen Beach” movie franchise, “To All the Boys: P.S. I Still Love You” and “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.”
The Birmingham, Alabama, native, now 27, was crowned winner of the 25th season of “Dancing with the Stars” in 2017.
In addition to Fisher headlining the New York City show, Oliver Award-winner Sam Tutty will return to the show when it reopens in London at the Noel Coward Theatre Oct. 26.
Stephen Christopher Anthony will return to the role when the North American tour relaunches on Dec. 7 in Greensboro, North Carolina.
In addition to Fisher, the returning Broadway company will include all cast members who were there at the time of the shutdown: Gabrielle Carrubba, Jessica Phillips, Christiane Noll, David Jeffery, Ivan Hernandez, Jared Goldsmith and Phoebe Koyabe, and Reese Sebastian Diaz, Zachary Noah Piser, Nathan Levy, Jane Pfitsch, Talia Simone Robinson, Dan Macke, Asa Somers, Josh Strobl and Nicole Van Giesen, along with Mateo Lizcano and Linedy Genao joining the company as understudies.
With the help of the musical’s mental health nonprofit partners in the U.S. and the U.K., all three productions will hold a special night in their first week of performances to honor mental health care workers and volunteers, who will be invited as guests.
Based on a story from composer Benji Pasek’s real life, “Dear Evan Hanson” is a coming-of-age story about a teen suffering from social anxiety, as he navigates a local tragedy for his own gain.
A film adaptation starring Ben Platt, who originated the titular role on Broadway, arrives in theaters Friday.
