Dear Evan Hansen cast London: Who will star in the West End musical and is it different actors to the Broadway shows?

This is the most anticipated musical since Hamilton to make the transfer from Broadway to London: It’s finally the year that Dear Evan Hansen debuts in the West End.

The show scooped up six of its nine Tony nominations last year, and has filled the UK’s theatre lovers with excitement.

It’s early days and a lot is still in development for the show but here’s what we know so far about the cast and and creatives for the West End transfer.

Will the London cast for Dear Evan Hansen be the same as Broadway?

Ben Platt was involved in the musical from its very first reading and won the Tony Award for Best Actor in a Musical when he opened the musical on Broadway, but won’t be taking on the role in London. The West End show will have a whole new cast.

Who will star in Dear Evan Hansen in London?

The cast hasn’t been announced yet for the London transfer. Open auditions ran in February to fill five of the main parts: Evan Hansen and four of his classmates Connor and Zoe Murphy, Jared Kleinman and Alana Beck. Casting information is expected to follow in April.

Who are the main characters in the show?

Evan Hansen is a 17 year old high schooler, clever and excruciatingly self-conscious. He has crippling social anxiety and is in therapy, where he is assigned to write letters to himself

Evan’s mother Heidi is a nurse’s aide who goes to paralegal school in the evening, meaning he is often left alone. She tries to connect with her son, but doesn’t understand what he goes through.

Connor Murphy is a troubled kid who goes to the same school as Evan. He has a bad relationship with his younger sister Zoe, who has been Evan’s crush for years. Their mother Cynthia is trying to keep the family together, while father Larry is always busy and distant.

Jared Kleinman is the closest thing to a friend that Evan has ever had, and Alana Beck is a classmate and “close acquaintance” of Connor’s.

Who is in the Dear Evan Hansen creative team?

The book for Dear Evan Hansen was written by Steven Levenson, with music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul (the team behind the music in La La Land and The Greatest Showman). The original creative team also returns, with Michael Greif directing, Stacey Mindich producing, David Korins on set design, Emily Rebholz on costume design, Japhy Weideman on lighting design, Peter Nigrini on projections and Nevin Steinberg on sound.
