Dear Evan Hansen at Noel Coward Theatre: Backstage with the writers and star of new West End musical

Broadway smash Dear Evan Hansen opened last night on the West End, and it’s safe to say that musical fans are excited about this one.

To add to that excitement, four of the team were on hand to show the Evening Standard around backstage. Songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul and book writer Steven Levenson welcomed us to the Noel Coward Theatre and led the tour to Sam Tutty’s dressing room, where he told us about starring in the “mind-blowing” musical.

Tutty described his experience of playing Evan Hansen, a “very lost” and “really lonely” boy who tells a lie that snowballs out of control and finds himself “struggling with a moral compass”.

Newcomer Tutty makes his West End debut as Evan and was selected after open auditions,

The show won six Tony Awards in 2017 when it opened on Broadway, including for best musical and best original score. It has a book by Steven Levenson and music and lyrics by The Greatest Showman songwriters Benj Pasek and Justin Paul.

Michael Greif returns to direct the show with the original Broadway creative team, including Danny Mefford’s choreography, scenic design by David Korins, costumes by Emily Rebholz, lighting by Japhy Weideman, sound by Nevin Steinberg and music supervision by Alex Lacamoire.
